CIS-Iscte is proud to be a partner in the Erasmus+ project READy - Addressing Disparities in Reading and Writing Acquisition through Personalising Technologies: A Cognitive and Societal Perspective, led by the Università degli Studi di Firenze (UNIFI), Italy. With Joana Baptista serving as the local coordinator at CIS-Iscte, this research project aims to combat early learning disadvantages in literacy among primary school children across Europe.
READy focuses on the priority of tackling learning disadvantages in education, addressing early signs of reading and writing difficulties in the first two years of primary education. According to Joana Baptista, “by doing so, the project seeks to prevent the progression of learning disorders and empower both educators and students with innovative tools and strategies.”
The project involves partners from Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Romania, creating a robust transnational collaboration. These partnerships foster shared knowledge and the development of state-of-the-art solutions to enhance literacy acquisition.
READy project aims to: 1) Equip Teachers: Train primary school teachers to identify socio-cognitive risk factors and use effective digital tools to address early literacy challenges; 2) Identify At-Risk Students: Provide an Interactive Evaluation Platform to detect children at risk for learning difficulties; and 3) Empower Students: Introduce game-based activities tailored to individual and environmental profiles to support cognitive processes critical to reading and writing.
The project employs a multifaceted approach to deliver a training package for teachers, including national and transnational courses and exchange workshops across four European countries, and developing an interactive evaluation platform to assess determinants of reading and writing difficulties. In addition, the project team aims to develop a game-based intervention toolkit underpinned by machine learning algorithms, to identify clusters of learning needs and personalize interventions.
By achieving its goals, READy envisions a transformative impact on educational practices. Teachers will be better prepared and equipped with advanced digital tools, enabling them to effectively address learning disadvantages in their classrooms. Educational strategies will become more personalized, leveraging cutting-edge technology to cater to the unique needs of each student. Moreover, the project fosters transnational collaboration, creating a vibrant network for sharing knowledge and refining interventions, ensuring a unified effort across Europe to enhance literacy education.
Joana Baptista highlights the importance of this project:
"By addressing literacy challenges early, READy aims to level the playing field for children at risk of falling behind in their education. Our work will empower teachers with the skills and tools they need to create inclusive learning environments."
