CIS-Iscte joined the Center for International Studies (CEI-Iscte), the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte), and the Information Sciences, Technologies and Architecture Research Center (ISTAR-Iscte) to organize a week of activities for the initiative "Ciência Viva no Laboratório 2024".
Ciência Viva no Laboratório consists of Summer scientific internships for kids and teens promoted by Ciência Viva. The four research units of Iscte proposed a joint internship focused on Society's challenges in the 21st century, with a multidisciplinary approach.
Over the course of a week (July 8-12), we demonstrated how research can play an active role in identifying solutions, seeking not only to stimulate young people's scientific creativity in the fields of Sociology, International Studies, Psychology and Digital Technologies, but also their ability to work as a team and get in touch with specialists in these areas.
A group of nine students, mainly from the area of Lisbon, participated in this Summer internship. They had the chance to be part of the workshop “How to create a people-friendly city for all ages?”, organized by the research team of the project GreenCity4Aging (Ref. 2022.03478.PTDC), namely its coordinators, Sibila Marques (CIS-Iscte) and Sara Eloy (ISTAR-Iscte), and its researchers, André Samora-Arvela (ISTAR-Iscte) and Mariana Montalvão (CIS-Iscte).
They visited Iscte's Lisbon Campus and its research facilities, including LAPSO-Psychology Laboratory, where Sofia Frade and Helena Santos presented the laboratory. The students explored different research equipment and tools to explore psychological and cognitive aspects relating to emotions, and sustainability.
The students also took part on a workshop promoted by researcher David Guedes (CIS-Iscte) the promotion of sustainable diets: "Who's afraid of the school canteen? Promoting food sustainability from the school". Here, they learned more about the carbon footprint of certain foods and engaged in a Mistery Box challenge, in which they came up with intervention strategies for behavioral changes in a school canteen.
Finally, the science communication team that supported this initiative, including our Science Communication manager, organized a small workshop about the scientific method and challenged the young students to think critically about contemporary concerns they would like to solve or learn more about.
The "Ciência Viva no Laboratório 2024" initiative brought together students to explore real-world challenges through a multidisciplinary approach. Over the week, participants engaged in various workshops and activities, learning about topics from sustainable diets to urban planning. This program not only sparked their interest in scientific research but also developed their teamwork and critical thinking skills, providing a valuable and inspiring experience.
