Iscte-Knowledge and Innovation will house research and knowledge production, technology transfer and interdisciplinary research units. The inauguration took place on the morning of November 20, 2023, with the presence of the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato, the Minister of Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa, and the Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva.
CIS-Iscte is already operating at the new building (Room 123 on the first floor of the B Wing), which is Iscte's new R&D center and will house more than a thousand researchers and hundreds of projects. Many of these were presented as part of the Science and Technology Week in an Open Day format, highlighting the transfer of knowledge and technology that characterizes the interdisciplinary research ongoing in the institution.

Iscte's rector, Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues highlighted the three projects that are already being developed within the scope of the Iscte-Knowledge and Innovation. One aims to revolutionize the sharing of health data in Europe; another combats hate speech online; and the third uses digital resources to articulate initiatives between social groups and municipalities. "Any of these three projects, like many others that will be launched and developed, show the interface potential that "Iscte - Knowledge and Innovation" has for crossing the areas of engineering, technology and architecture with the social and behavioral sciences, economics and management," says Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues. "This center is the realization in Lisbon of the academic, architectural and urban concepts of the 'University without Walls', which promote the interaction of academia with the surrounding social and economic fabric."
