Summary:

Parent-child physical aggression is a key precursor for physical child abuse—a pressing public health concern with well-documented negative outcomes for children and society. This talk will introduce a theoretical basis for understanding why parents may engage in parent-child aggression; present findings from a prospective longitudinal study testing these theorized predictors of parent-child aggression; describe new directions to expand its assessment, focusing on implicit processes; and discuss the potential effects on children as well as the potential for bidirectional processes.
